I used to teach bartending years ago, and am now bartending again at a 4Star restaurant after taking many years off. When teaching we taught our students never to remove the glass from the tin after shaking the drink by hitting the tin with your palm. The reason being, the glass can sometimes shatter and cause terrible cuts to the hand.

I am wondering if this has happened to anyone and what injuries you suffered. The location I am working at now requires me to use my hand instead of tapping it on the bar, and I am trying to get some stories to present to them in order to counter their requirement.

Thanks for any help.

My first night bartending in a shot bar I tried to crack it open and the glass broke over my left hand while trying to catch it. Luckily some firefighters from the local fire school were in the bar and I had 5 tipsy paramedics fixing up my hand, and they did a great job. I personally just crack the glass back and forth now to get it loose. On smaller drinks I'll use the smaller metal tin and a gibraltar glass as a mini boston shaker.

Try finding/using a plastic pint "glass" for your shaker top.
