For example, I saw the instructions here: http://www.amazingstill.com - but what it produces is around 40% alcohol by volume.

I can't imagine there's much pleasant about the substance that would come out of that... what would you do with it to make it more palatable?

There's a list of things that you can make on the site from grain alcohol: http://www.drinksmixer.com/search/?q=&iq=494&d=1&p=1

But grain alcohol seems to sit somewhere between 75% and 95% alcohol by volume.

To get up to that level of purity, it looks like a custom-built rig is necessary - plus there's the inherent danger of having something that is 95% pure alcohol near a heat source.

Legality aside, what do you do with a liquid that's 40% alcohol by volume?

40% = 80 proof
A lot of boozes aren't any stronger than that.
Bacardi 151 is 75.5% alcohol by volume.
I'd age it in a charred oak barrel for about 10 years and see what you end up with.

You could try finding cinnamon sticks and filling a mason jar with them.Add the shine and let it sit in a dark spot for a while.

at 40% filter it a few times through a good charcol filter, it would basicly be vodka, from there go to your local home brewing supply store, they may have spirit and liquor essences that you can add to it to give it a better taste, it would end up with a product simillar to a Woodstock premix (dunno if u get them in the US, god i hope u dont)
