I'm starting at a new bar and the owner's have never owned a bar. Last night was our first night open and I ended up splitting my tips with the owner. Now I've heard different sides to this the but the majority has been that isn't fair for the owner's to do that because they are still making profit off the sales. If anyone has any thoughts that would be great. Kind of stuck.

I'm still pretty reserved for tipping the owner, but...
Deep down I believe you keep what you earn, employee or employer.
Its a new business, I'd rather focus on making the business work. It is greedy to think just because he owns the place he has no right to keep the tips he earns.
At least the owner is active and trying to make it work. I would rather split tips and have a job then look for another job in a few months.

A bar business is a different kind of business all together. If you didn't know it was the owner would you tip? It's based on the service provided and if the service is good, then the tip should go to the person who gave the good service. It shouldn't matter if the person is the owner or not. Most of the money made in a bar goes to everyone else.
I have worked in a number of bars over the years, and the general rule is that if the owner or manager works behind a bar with you as a bartender for the night, then they are entitled to tips. However, if they work behind a bar (especially with the till) they also have to cover their share of shortages at the end of the night, both on the cash-up and shortages of stock. In essence, they cannot be in and out of a bar, take tips and leave all liability with you. Hope this helps
I've been in this situation before...but in my case, the owner was more of a hindrance than a help. Had he actually been an asset behind the bar, I probably wouldn't have minded, but he was a major pain and slowed things down quite a bit. The main thing was that everyone wanted to talk to him b/c he was the owner, so he would stand there in the way all night talking to people. It cluttered up the bar and made the line REALLY long, hence, longer wait times. It would have been better if he had stayed out on the floor so all that "talking" traffic would have followed him elsewhere. Having to miss out on $ at the end of the night after dealing with that the whole time was really annoying. We eventually had a discussion about it though and he stopped bartending...lol.

Been there, done that. In my case the owner would help me by bringing ice and he expected half of the tips. I just laughed at his face and gave him a $1 for every time he brought me ice. Since i was the only bartender there, i had no barback, so i did most of the things myself. Except get the ice cause i would be super busy and i couldnt leave the bar. One time he told me that he was going to charge me a % on my tips since he was allowing to work at his bar. Personally i think thats stupid. I just said ok and didnt go back on friday and saturday just to give him a taste of what its like to be behind the bar. Of course he apoligized for everything and wanted me back the next day. So i went back on my terms and he agreed to them. Until he wanted to charge me a % on my credit card tips. He quickly took it back what he said cause he remembered of what happened last time. Anyways, if the owner does his share of the work, and actually works, he should get a piece of the tips.

The key is false advertisement. They offered these updates to 3G owners on the premise that the devices would be at their peak functionality, with added features, which prompts them to install it. Unfortunately, it didnt turn out to be so and Apple has to answer to their paying customers.

now that's the attitude that you should have as a bartender, and I agreed that we should not keep ourself quite for that matters. Your suggestion really are useful when it comes to be used. Let me keep it just in case my future employer try to give me an attitude!!

The more you stay quit and say nothing. The more they'll take advantage of you. it could lead to making you work for free. paying you less or just make you work more for less pay. You just gotta be tough and tell him straight up. I understand at times its hard to stand up to the manager or owner. But you gotta do it. I just recently started at a new club. i did the bar for them. i fixed it up and all. i told them straight up. When it comes to bartending/club business, im no bullshitter. im tough, strict, and im not a baby sitter. That i expect nothing but the best from all the employees. The owner just said your hired, not even 2 minutes into the interview.
I work at a bar/grill where the owners come in everyday and sometimes even work as servers or cooks for big home games or something. When they do actually cook or serve they include themselves in the tipout, which I think is totally fair. Sometimes they do get in the way...especially in the bar which is why they just let us bar staff alone by now..but even if they get in the way at some point, they are still making it a lot easier for the staff just by having 2 extra people on the floor.

Where I live it is illegal for owners and managers to take tips

My personal opinion is if they are forced to work then they should get tipped a small percentage but if they are working due to greed and not wanting to hire someone then they shouldn't get anything. Many patrons won't tip an owner so just because they are working instead of a real bartender, they are already costing you money.

its funny but true. owners wont get tipped much or tipped at all. at one bar i used to work at. i would make great tips. so the owner got curious and started doing some shifts during the so so nights and the most he made was $15 on a 8 hour shift. i would make that in 5 mins in that bar..LOL.. he would get jealous that he started accusing me and the other bartender of stealing.. lmao
