Hi ppls i would like to ask when you are working as a bartender does it mean you must be a good drinker as well. I have come across that some customers they will buy you drink to drink with them and usually not just 1 drink is a couple. I am wondering if the bartender is not good drinking knock out before the customer does dont it sound bad....

hmmmm,OK.it can happen but in that occasions as bartender you got to be tricky because you are the master and you must have te situation under control only that you will approve that you are a proffesional...
Each proffesional bartender have to learn howe to provide certain situations and after that you can't make a mistake.

I've had several people buy me shots in one night. I'll usually do one or two, but I stole the trick from Cyote Ugly where she "chases" it with a beer and just spits the alcohol into the bottle. Dump it when no one's looking and keep a bit of water in it.

im not a heavy drinker or at times i wont drink at all. i rarely drink. i think out of all the bartenders in my hometown i drink the less. but i do get customers that buy me shots, drinks or beers. if im allowed to i drink em. atleast once a week i get a customer or a regular buy me alot of shots. this one customer and his 2 friends usually go thru a 2 bottles of don julio anejo a night. they include me with the bottle so i end up drinking half ofa bottle or more with them. my trick would be drinking alot of water and gatorades. i end up with a good buzz but not a bad buzz to interfere with my work. if i know ahead of time theyre goin i have big meal before they get there or if i dont feel like drinking i pull out the tylenol. i tell them im taking medications so they wont throw shots my way. it always works...

This may just be a young totally inexperienced brat talking here (me), but i don't think a bartender should be a good drinker, they should be a Responsible one.
I'm old fashioned when it comes to this, If I ever end up working at a bar, I'm never gonna drink while I'm actually working, because i'm very weak against alcohol's effects. Shots aren't my thing either, I don't drink for the buzz, but for the taste (which seems to be a lost cause for teenagers nowadays).
As for me, i'd just try giving excuses like "I have to drive back home" or "Only a sip", but that's just me.

If a customer buys you a drink, you don't have to drink it. An easy solution is to say, "I can't drink on the job, but I'll have it after my shift, thanks". That way, you can take the money for the drink and keep it as part of your tips rather than drinking something that you don't want to drink. Else you can pour yourself a shot of water and do a water shot with the customer.

I dont drink on the job, not because i cant but because im not aloud and at the end of the night im happier taking the tips i made and buying drinks in a reasonably priced bar with friends then drinking with guys i dont really know on my over priced bar. I get alot of "and one for yourself" i thank them and i do appricate it but i still dont drink on the bar. except the shaken shots which are watered down anyway, i like to pour the last dribbles for myself and do a shot with the people buying, dont feel anything even after a few of these as the last shot is just flavored water (shaken shots, great money maker by the way). Thats just what i do hope i could help.

Its not completely true that you have to be a good drinker in order to be a good bartender. There are many people who are working as bartenders but do not drink at all. And they are doing pretty well. But somewhere the factor is, every customer likes a bartender more if he can company him in his drinking.

In my opinion drinking behind the bar is sloppy and very unprofessional. I just tell my guests to buy me a beer when I get off work if the offer still stands.
