About me:
22 yrs old.
Attempting to make some kind of career out of hospitality. I'm a waiter/barman, not sure I ever want to go into management but for the pay, I may consider it; but for now I'm happy with my pay and am just look to excel at this for now.
No school training whatsoever, but 6 months of working and reading and researching. This basically amounts to trying every beer I can get my hands on, visiting every winery cellar door anywhere vaguely local, and reading a couple of books.
Mostly I serve beer and wine but I do some basic spirits too. Spirits is my weak point, because 90% of what I have to make is bourbon and coke or scotch and coke.
I'm just here on this forum hoping to learn what I can really.

Oh wow... if you're looking for learning about spirits... you've got a loooooooooooooooot to learn.
I'm only 18 but i've been reading up on cocktail mixing and drinking and tasting and physical occurrences in bartending for 3 years that I've incorporated into my comic (which is about bartenders)
I'm sure everyone here is very knowledgeable on liquors, as for me, I'm more knowledgeable on the subject of mixing.... i know basics of liquors and such, but mixing them is something i'm very good at.

I actually checked out your comic last night, looks pretty cool (i.e. keep working on it so I can check back and catch the rest of the story, ok).
Learned a little from it too.
Are there any sources of good information you'd recommend regarding mixing?

And try reading a manga called 'Bartender', you can search for the chapters of it, and it teaches one a lot about mixing cocktails and spirits in the reading process

Random tip for anyone reading:
Even as a guy who's knowledge of wine is in it's infancy, every comment about wine I've come across from bartenders online who seem to be otherwise excellent at their job, makes me cringe.
If you haven't already, do some wine tastings. If you look at a bottle and think "wine", you're doing it wrong, if you look at it and think "aged, warm climate Shiraz, stored in French oak" you're getting closer.

relax, I try my best to not botch up wine either, i know there's several grapes both red and white, Rosé, etc. i know the general characteristics of the more popular wines, i taste it all the time, and I watch some daily blog thing that talks about wine all the time (daily grape) and I know for a fact that very little wines can be made into a cocktail, but it sure is a fun challenge.i still can't diferentiate between what types of barrels they were in, but i at least get the tasting notes pretty well
