Drink Categories

Hello everyone!!
I am a bit dim when it comes to drink categories, and was wondering if some bright person could enlighten me on what all of them are. I guess what I am asking is, what are the standard drink categories and sub categories? Like for example, there is Beer, Wine, Cocktails, Shooters, Mixers, Martinis, and their sub-cateogories would be something like ale/lager/stout, red/white, daiquiri?/gin&tonic, lemon drop, ... the rest I am not sure. You can see why I am dim on the subject =)
Where do weird ones like irish coffee, muff dives, absinthe, long islands, etc fit in? If anyone has the answers to this, or a link where I can find out that would be most appreciated!!! Thank you in advance! =)

Thanks a lot for providing such a nice listing. Even I was looking for a place where I can find some information about various categories of drinks. I have searched at quite a few places but the information I found was not so precise and it was really difficult grabbing it or using it. But finally, I found something I was looking for.
