Ok this is going to sound lame...

I am 35, and I have never really been an alcohol drinker.

No I am not a Mormon. I actually grew up with a bar in my house, and most of my relatives had one in theirs. I don't know why, maybe I thought I wouldn't like the taste. I couldn't stand beer or champagne.

But I figured life is too short not to experiment. So I came on here looking for rum and coke recipes because I am a big soda fan. Can anyone think of other alcoholic cocktails that might be good for newbies?

Welcome to the world of social drinking! One of the first things that you will want to determine is which alcohols treat you right - for instance tequila (top shelf hornitos not well) is good for me but even a couple of vodka drinks will make me sick. For most people, its the opposite. Here are a few suggestions:

Rum: daquiris (rum, lime, and sugar) - strawberry is best if they have it. Great bars will have fresh fruit.

Spiced rum: half and half with Tuaca (a caramel tasting italian liquor that most bars will have) I call this an Italian Captain. Absolutely fantastic. Ice is your choice (I dont)
Sex with the captain - sweet but good - spiced rum and fruit juices.

Vodka: Screwdriver (vodka and orange) for more tangy flavor try orange and grapefruit
White russian: Alcoholic chocolate milk! Vodka, coffee liquor, and half and half

Tequila: Tequila (go top shelf please!) soda water, and muddled limes and lemons (no sugar+hydration=no hangover!)

Whiskey: Washington apple: whiskey, sour apple pucker, cranberry

Anything with any soda!

Just thought I'd say hi since you were worried about sounding lame--I'm glad you asked your question! If you're lame, I'm even more so, as I'm 42 and right there with you. Let me know what you find that you like! :)

30mls of Bundaberg Rum, and ice in a highball glass. Top up with Ginger Beer. Dark and Stomy YUM. Fantastic on a hot day.
Cheers :)

Many light drinks are there one can start with. But one thing you have to keep in your mind that you should not be addictive to anything. Starting with a light drink will somewhere keep you away from this threat, but still chances are many that after some time you start feeling a desperate need of drinking. Stay away from such circumstances.
